Isla Mujeres jeweler offers refund to American tourist sold fake ring

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — An Isla Mujeres merchant has agreed to refund an American woman who paid for fake jewelry. The island shopper forked over 9,000 pesos for a double ring set said to be gold and diamonds. The seller even provided her with a store appraisal.

However, she quickly learned her diamonds were cubic zirconia and the gold was actually silver. Mary “S” took to social media where she posted photos of her ring set and official store receipts from her August 21 purchase.

“I was scammed. They sold me two rings indicating that they were diamonds in 14k gold and when I returned to my hotel I realized that the rings said 925 inside. From what I know about jewelry, that means silver,” she posted.

“They scammed me out of 500 US dollars, there is no contact information for me to call the store,” she also wrote.

Isla Mujeres store manager Ronal Ramos has since agreed to refund her money and personally apologize. As for the person responsible for the sale, Ramos says he was fired for breach of trust. “He was a commission agent,” he said.

Ramos also agreed that although the rings purchased were not what she was lead to believe they were, neither was the price. He said a gold ring set with inlaid diamonds like that could cost around 50,000 pesos not 9,000.

He also said the ring set she purchased should have cost around 5,000 pesos not the 9,000 she was charged. Ramos said the man who made the sale was a temporary commission agent for the business.
